Schlener, Frances Marie (Read) 1922 - 2006

Frances Marie Schlener, 84, passed away on June 2, 2006, at the Sullivan Park Care Center in Spokane.

Funeral Services were held June 7 at the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home Chapel in Bonners Ferry, with internment in the Moravia Cemetery.

Frances was born February 11, 1922, in Choteau, Montana, to Martin and Mary Read. She was a 1939 graduate of Bonners Ferry High School, and later attended business college in Spokane, the Bible Institute of Los Angeles and the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Norman, Oklahoma.

She married John A. Schlener June 8, 1942, and the marriage was followed by his departure for bombardier duties in World War II. His service was cut short by wounds, and he spent considerable time in surgery and recovery from his injuries. After his recuperation, John and Frances attended a program in preparation for missionary service in Brazil with the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism. Joined by John's brother, Paul, and his wife Jesse, the two couples served together for decades as a missionary team on the Upper Amazon River in Brazil.

After their full retirement in the early 1990s, the Schleners moved to Spokane to be closer to family.

Frances is survived by her husband; children John R. Schlener, Seattle; David and Kimberly Schlener, Tyler, Texas; Phillip and Elena Schlener, missionaries to Portugal; and Stephen and Allene Hopson, Spokane; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
