KATHERINE DALKE KLIEWER

Mrs. Katherine Dalke Kliewer, daughter of John and Maria Penner Dalke, was born on December 17, 1889, at Hillsboro, Kansas, and departed from this life on May 28, 1946, at the age of 56 years, five months and 11 days at her home at Newport, Wash.

On confession of her faith in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior she was baptized in June, 1907, by Rev. J. J. Kliewer and became a member of the Ebenezer Mennonite church at Gotebo, Okla. She remained a faithful member of the Mennonite church until her death and rendered valuable service as Sunday School teacher and organist whenever she was asked to serve.

She was united in marriage on September 22, 1909, to Frank J. Kliewer, by Rev. J. J. Kliewer. To this happy union were born nine children, three sons and six daughters, all of whom survive. Their wedding verse, Psalm 84:12, “O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee,” was also the topic for their 25th wedding anniversary sermon.

In January, 1945, she underwent surgery for cancer of the stomach, after which she never regained her strength. She remained with her dear ones a year and a half, during which time she slowly became weaker, but did not suffer much pain. The last month of her life she was bedfast and on May 28, 1946, at 7:30 in the evening she went quietly to sleep.

She was able to make a three-weeks visit to Kansas and Oklahoma in March and saw all her brothers and sisters, and other relatives and friends there. One of her dearest wishes and prayers was answered when her son Wallace was flown home from Germany by the U. S. army and arrived on Mother’s Day of this year.

She leaves to mourn her passing a loving husband, three sons, six daughters, five sons-in-law, and six grandchildren. They are: Lars and Elda Kanikeberg and two children, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Ernest and Margaret Black, Newport; Frank and Lola Harms and two children, Aberdeen, Idaho; Gordon and Anna Merle Kliewer, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Robert and Helen Beaubler and son, Newport; Richard and Norma Schirmer and daughter, Newport; T/Sgt. John Wallace Kliewer; Doris and Kenneth Kliewer, Newport. Also three brothers and five sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held May 31, 1946, at the Springvalley Mennonite church at Newport, Wash. Rev. Peter Unruh, Newport, and Rev. J. M. Franz, Salem, Oregon, conducted the services. Pall bearers were David and Paul Bergen, Gus and Henry Hiebert, and Eric and Abe Krebiel, all of Newport. A mixed quartet sang “Leb Voll, Leb Voll,” “Tread Softly,” “Asleep in Jesus” and “My God and I.” Burial was in the Mennonite cemetery. — The Kliewer Vamily.
